BRİEF HİSTORY OF DATÇA

The semiisland of Datça, which is between known holidaydestinations, like Bodrum, Marmaris, Gökova, Dalyan and Fethiye, has a very old history .

The semiisland was first settled by the Karians and after the 11. century B.C. by the Dorians.

The Dorians had established a union of six cities, which was called Hexapolis, and Cnidos was the center of it.

Against the danger of the Persian Invasion, at Balıkaşıran, the narrowest point of the semiisland, between the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean, the Dorians intended to tear the semiisland apart from teh mainland, but cause of fright from the anger of the gods, they let it.

After the Persians, Datça got under the regency of the Athenian, the Spartan, the Roman and after 1282 unter the regency of the turkish royalties of the Germiyanoğulları and Menteşeoğulları. In 1390, the Ottoman Sultan Yıldırım Beyazıt annected Datça as a part of the Empire.

At the regency of Sultan Reşad, the semiisland was renamed to Reşadiye.

After the foundation of the Turkish Republic, Datça got a district of Muğla.
